(6) Answers About Self-Consumption Electricity

From 31/10/2024 according to law 5106/2024 the connection of PV installations is carried out exclusively with net-billing & virtual net-billing.

01. What is net-billing?

The netting between the energy absorbed from the grid and the electricity produced by the PV plant is carried out at the same time as it is produced (net-billing). In contrast, under the previous regime (net-metering), netting was carried out at a later date with a maximum of (3) years.

02. What is the difference between net-billing & virtual net-billing?

In the case of net-billing, the consumption supply is located in the same or adjacent site as the generating station or is located in another site but electrically connected to a dedicated interconnection line.
In the case of virtual net-billing the consumption facilities to be netted are not electrically connected to the internal electrical installation of the generating station even if they are located in the same or adjacent premises. Generating stations may be located in any region of the country, irrespective of the location of the consumption facilities to be netted.

03. What categories of consumers are concerned?

It concerns all categories of consumers:

  • Residential
  • Commercial
  • Farmers
  • Local authorities
  • Energy Communities

04. Is there compensation for the excess (injected) energy?

Yes, any excess energy injected into the grid may be compensated for (20) years based on the wholesale market price at the time of injection.

05. What applies to residential consumers?

For photovoltaic stations with an installed capacity of up to 10.8 kW with the application of net-metering or virtual net-metering exclusively for residential consumers (households), a special programme ” Household Photovoltaics” was established.

Household self-consumers are not considered to be traders and are not subject to tax obligations for the disposal of the energy produced and injected under the netting scheme.

06. What are the power limits?

In the case of net-metering & zero injection, the capacity of each generating station (in kWp) can be up to one hundred percent (100%) of the agreed consumption capacity (in kVA).

In the case of virtual net-metering, the capacity of each generating station (in kWp) can be up to one hundred percent (100%) of the installed capacity of all the netted consumptions (in kVA).Â
